Dinosaurs Crafts Fossil ornaments or necklaces You need a small fossil for this craft. If you have a
suitable beach nearby you may be able to find an ammonite fossil. If
not, they can usually be purchased for between 50p and £1.50. We
bought ours from Borders book shop. After explaining what a fossil is,
divide the Rainbows into small groups and give each group a fossil and
each child a small piece of clay. The Rainbows need to roll the clay
into a ball and then press the fossil into the clay to leave an
imprint. To turn this into a necklace make a hole through the top of
the clay using a pencil. When the clay is dry you can thread a piece of
wool through the hole.
Games Dinosaur Bone Game Cut 'dinosaur bones' from white paper and
place them at one end of the hall. Split the Rainbows into teams. The
girls take it in turns to run up and collect a bone. When they have all
the bones they want each team 'builds' a dinosaur.
Hunt the Dinosaur Print dinosaurs onto card (I used mircosoft
clipart). Hide the dinosaurs around the room. As the Rainbows arrive
see how many different dinosaurs they can find. Alternatively give each
child a card with one dinosaur on and see how many of that type they
can find.
Dinosaur Dig Split the Rainbows into small groups and
give each group a tray with sand, flour or compost in. Hidden in the
tray should be something for them to find. We used little plastic
dinosaurs (purchased from a local bits and bobs shop at £1.99 for
15) and old chicken bones that had been repeatedly boiled. Each Rainbow
was given a large paintbrush to uncover their finds.
Run from T-Rex
The Rainbows are split into teams. One child
from each team stands in a hoop at the other end of the hall. Each team
are baby dinosaurs and the girl at the other end of the hall is their
mother. The baby dinosaurs have wandered from their nest. When their
'mother' calls their name they must run to their nest without being
caught by the T-Rex (a Rainbow or helper who stands in the middle of
the hall roaring). If T-Rex tags them they must stand in T-Rex's nest
(a hoop in the centre of the hall). They can only leave the hoop if
their 'mother' comes and tags them. This is an adapted version of mother hen.
