Term 2009 |
|
This term we had an American theme. We exchanged postcards with 50 Girl Scout Troops in the USA, gained our Toymaker badge and our World Cultures badge. Activities during January included making toy rattle snakes, icing US state flags onto cakes and biscuits, painting giant Girl and Brownie Scouts and playing games. 2nd February:
Groundhog Day
We made groundhog puppets,
beaded icicles and played with shadows. Since it was snowing and few of
us made it to the meeting we also had a chip supper!
9th February: Native American Crafts We made dream catchers
and NW Coast
style transformation masks.
23rd February: World
Thinking Day Celebration
The
Guides planned and organised a thinking day celebration for us which
included crafts and sampling food from different countries. We finished
with a Thinking Day ceremony.
2nd March: The First Thanksgiving We made puppets and then each six
performed a thanksgiving story.
9th March: Amercian Thanksgiving Feast We made native American style headbands
and necklaces, Turkey napkin holders, and Thanksgiving place cards. We
then sang some thanksgiving songs and ate a thanksgiving feast which
included candied butternut squash, sweet potato pie and corn on the cob.
16th March: Girl Scout Badges One of our older brownies helped to organise and ran the meeting this evening. We started by making craft foam Girl Scouts. We then tried a clause from five different Girl Scout badges and added a mini badge to our craftfoam Girl Scout each time. We made a clay pot, an origami tulip, a fake fossil, tried some acting games and investigated some optical illusions. 23rd March: Wide Awake
Challenges
We began the meeting by making
fridge magnets and playing games like Twister. We then played
Squirrels. In our sixes we then undertook several challenges and games
to test our co-operation and communication skills. The Gnomes did
particularly well and deserve a great big - well done! At the end of
the meeting we sang The Ants Went Marching and Everywhere We Go.
30th March: Easter
We made Easter bunny cakes,
decorated wooden Easter eggs and made craft foam bunny egg holders. We
then had a team race where we pushed small eggs along with our noses,
played under and over using eggs and egg bowling. We then went outside
for an Easter egg hunt. When we came back in we played egg catch and
egg tip-it. We handed out the first edition of our unit newspaper - the
Brownie Times.
