Knowing your community

These are the challenges included in the knowing your community section of our Wise Owl booklet.
Often we work on a challenge in a small group, but sometimes the whole Pack is involved.


Adventure

A1) Find out about local symbols and design your own coat of arms.
A2) Make a six book.
A3) Know where your county is on a British map and where your town is on a county map.
A4) Find out how many Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger groups there are in your district. Attend a district event.
A5) On a map of the local area label any shops, telephone boxes, or parks. If possible go for a walk around the area.
A6) Find out more about your fellow Brownies.
A7) Know what an M.P is and who your local M.P is.
A8) Know the flags that make up the Union flag.
A9) Do another challenge that will help you learn more about your community.



Adventure On

AO1) Read a local legend and draw a picture or act it out.
AO2) Visit a local Guide unit.
AO3) On a map of Europe label Britain and three other countries. Draw the flag of the European Union and find out something about it.
AO4) Find out what district, division and county your Pack belongs to. Make a greetings card to send to another Pack.
AO5) Draw a map of the local area. Labelling places of interest: hospital, school, shops, library, post office, places of worship, police station.
AO6) Sample food from a local take away(s) and taste test it.
AO7) Write a letter to your local M.P on an issue that concerns you or arrange to look round a building of political significance.
AO8) Know the patron saints and national emblems of the countries in the United Kingdom. Learn the national anthem.
A09)  Learn a traditional dance from one of the countries in the United Kingdom.
AO10) Do another challenge that will help you learn more about your community.
