planet gareth : stuff : swirliology

Swirliology is the study of swirly things. There are many swirly things in the world, but they often go without their due recognition or even completely unobserved.

This pagelet is in its infancy right now, so be kind to it. But to show that it's more than just an exciting word, here is proof that Swirliology has the backing (and non-backing) of Famous People.

Here is a copy of a letter I sent about Swirliology. Adam Hart-Davis replied, declining to support Swirliology directly, but wishing the cause all the best. But then, earlier this week, Patrick Moore replied, proving that he is, without a doubt, Patrick Moore. (I nearly wrote to Stephen Hawking as well, but decided not to since he worked in the building next door and I hadn't actually received my PhD at that point.)

Many years later, I noticed this in a biography of Patrick Moore. The sentence quoted from the top is pretty much word-for-word the start of this page! I wrote to the author who said that Patrick had indeed said this quote on numerous occasions. While I am delighted to have influenced him in the area of Swirliology, I am very amused that he took the quote as his own!

More recently, I spotted this at a display in the Science Museum.

Ooh, swirly!
