Nothing rhymes with Eleanor

Poetry is a romance minefield. Yes, it's romantic, yes, some women love it. But, and I can't stress this enough, it only works if it's good. You don't need to write your own, just take an extract from a real poet. Yes that's right, a real one. One who does this sort of thing for a living. One who is good.

If you really must write your own, then remember - it doesn't have to rhyme. Specifically, you should never ever ever try to rhyme the girl's name with something. Never. Even more specifically, do not try to rhyme "Eleanor" with "smell of her". No.

Poems do not have to rhyme. They do have to scan though. Learn what this means! Recite the mantra - "Rhyme no, scan yes. Rhyme no, scan yes." until it sticks.

Also, when enclosing your poem in an envelope, please try to resist the temptation to write S.W.A.L.K. or some such on the back. You are not in primary school. Or perhaps you are, in which case go ahead, the girls will love it.
